My Story

On Thursday 27th February 2020 I will be joining a small team on a trek to Everest Base Camp, climbing to 17,000 feet in the highest mountain range on Earth. Due to reach Base Camp on Sunday March 8th we will be walking on glaciers, crossing deep gorges on suspension bridges and breathing air with only half the oxygen of that at sea level. At night the temperature will plunge to 25 degrees below freezing. We will be joining a small team who are trekking from Kathmandu to Everest, following the route of the 1953 Everest expedition in which Tensing Norgay and Edmund Hilary successfully reached the summit.

The aim of the expedition is to raise funds for the Young Explorer Programme of the UK charity Explorers against Extinction. All participants are all paying for their own flights and expenses, so every penny donated goes to the charity.

Explorers against Extinction campaigns to raise awareness about the threats facing the world’s most iconic wildlife and their habitats. The charity does incredible work, and the Young Explorers Programme allows young conservationists to participate in important wildlife conservation projects through raising funding and campaigning to publicise their work and considerable achievements.

You can read about the charity’s wonderful work on its website:

This is a tremendously important cause - none of us want to see our children growing up in a world in which iconic animal species have disappeared – and the raising of funds to support this aim is very important. An act of charity is just that, a small voluntary gift to an important cause, but I would like to ask just a few things:

• Please support me – I would be delighted to see a contribution to this wonderful charity. Remember - EVERY PENNY goes to the charity; my fellow travelers and I are covering all our own costs.

• Every contribution helps, no matter how small. We all work hard to earn our money. Clearly if you’re feeling generous that’s fine by me! Remember you can select the option to hide the size of your contribution, so no matter how small – or large 😉 – no one will know!

Waking up in a sleeping bag when it’s twenty-five degrees below freezing will be far easier if I know I have the support of my friends and business partners, and indeed anyone who cares about the kind of world we will be passing to our children and grandchildren.

THANK YOU!
